How to Keep Your Cat Cool in the Summer

Summer is here, and while we love the sunshine, our beloved ragdolls might find the heat a bit much!

A ragdoll’s long fur is a worthy opponent to the cold winter months…but what happens when the summer heat comes? Read more to learn how to keep your cat cool in the summer!

Our beautiful, long-haired companions are particularly susceptible to overheating due to their long fur and thick undercoats. Signs of a ragdoll struggling with heat can include lethargy, rapid breathing, drooling, and even vomiting. In severe cases, heatstroke can be life-threatening, so it’s crucial to take proactive steps to keep your feline friend comfortable and safe during the warmer months. But don’t worry, with a few simple adjustments, you can ensure your ragdoll stays cool as a cucumber! Below are some ways to keep your cat cool in the summer.

One of the easiest ways to provide immediate relief is by investing in a cooling mat. These innovative mats absorb body heat, providing a refreshingly cool surface for your cat to lounge on. Hydration is also key, and many cats are enticed to drink more water from a flowing source. Consider a drinking fountain, which keeps water fresh and aerated. For a bit of fun, a water play mat can be a fantastic way to encourage play while keeping their body temperature at a safe level as opposed to running around the house chasing a string!

Beyond specific products, there are everyday actions you can take. Keep your home cool by closing curtains during the hottest parts of the day and using fans or air conditioning. Always ensure your ragdoll has access to shaded areas if they venture outdoors (see our blog about outdoor safety for cats!). Another delightful way to help them cool down is with frozen treats! You can purchase specially formulated cat treats and freeze small amounts of these treats as well as cat-safe broth or wet food.

By implementing these tips and utilizing these fantastic products, you can help keep your cat cool in the summer with ease and comfort. Enjoy the sunny days knowing your cherished companion is safe and relaxed. Here’s to a cool and comfortable summer for you and your magnificent ragdoll!
